A Client’s Life Changing Story

Life doesn’t always go according to plan.  When clients need help the most, a close relationship with an advisor makes all the difference.

Nearly two years ago and during the early part of the Covid-19 pandemic, I received a call that my client’s wife was passing away.

This is his story, in his words:

I met Lloyd about 7 years ago when he came into the fitness centre I owned at the time and became a client. Lloyd and I hit it off right away, and quickly developed not only a close business relationship but friendship. As Lloyd and I got to know each other, he began to tell me what he did for a living, how his services could benefit me, and the value of having life/disability/ critical illness insurance as a self-employed person and soon to be married man.

After many meetings, lots of education from Lloyd, and answering many of my questions, my wife and I decided to take the plunge and get insurance coverage. I got critical illness, disability, and life coverage, and my wife got life and disability. Little did we know what was in store for us as a couple in the years to come. Fast forward to June 2018, my wife and I have been married for over 3 years and she gets diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer. She undergoes 3 months of treatment, and she is given a clean bill of health in December of 2018. 9 months go by, and my wife starts getting pain in her lower back and abdomen. After a variety of tests, she is diagnosed once again with the same cancer, but this time it is Stage 4. We are told she only has 18 months to live.

In March of 2020, after many complications, surgeries, treatment, and blockages from her tumours, we are told her cancer is untreatable and she only has 3 weeks to live. At this time, Lloyd happens to text me out of the blue, to check-in as we hadn’t spoken to each other for quite awhile. I proceeded to phone him and explain to him what was going on. After exchanging a few minutes of conversation, Lloyd proceeds to bring up Shannon’s life insurance policy and explains what my wife’s life insurance policy can do, since she is terminally ill.

It turned out the policy was able to pay out 25 % of the face value to the beneficiary of someone who is terminally ill right away. If it wasn’t for having Lloyd in my corner, I would have never known about this and would have never received the assistance to use this benefit in the policy. This helped in covering my wife’s cremation and memorial costs, dealing with other legal matters, and the general expenses that go along with the passing of an individual. After my wife’s passing, Lloyd was there to help me process my claim for the remainder of the insurance policy and the claim was paid out in about 5 days. He made the process seamless and easy during an extremely difficult time for me.

I never thought that at the age of 33, I would be making a life insurance claim for my spouse who passed away. It’s something you never expect to deal with at that age. Having insurance coverage, but also having Lloyd as a professional, educated, and valuable advisor and friend, is something I am forever grateful for.

I would highly recommend Lloyd as a financial and insurance advisor and recommend getting insurance coverage for life’s unexpected events. Insurance is something I’ve always been an advocate of, but I am even more now given the life experience I have had. Protecting yourself, your spouse/partner, and your family is the prudent and responsible thing to do.

Thank you for all your help and guidance Lloyd.
